A steam train on America’s oldest continuously operating railroad approaches its passing of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania’s oldest cemetery. Still operating under its June 9, 1832 charter, the Strasburg was 151 years old at the time of this photo. Nonetheless, when the fledgling common carrier surveyed its route from Paradise to Strasburg, it was located next to a cemetery whose first interment had occurred some 115 years prior when Madame Ferree, wife of landowner Daniel Ferree passed away. The Ferrees and the Carpenter family became related through a subsequent generation’s marriage, and the cemetery became the burial ground for both families.
