| Flagstone Masonry from the Old Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe - The road bed and multiple bridge piers from the pre-1930's alignment of the AT&SF Needles Subdivision between Siberia and Ash Hill are visible in the photo as they cross the wash located between the current North and South tracks near Klondike California.
The piers and abutments are made of hand cut Flagstone that was brought in from somewhere in Arizona or New Mexico and mortared together to form flood resistant spans to bridge the many washes that dot the Mojave Desert.
A date in the concrete on the pier on the right reads 1928 and there are pieces of 80-90 lb steel rail lying in the wash.
The stack train in the photo is rolling down the East side of Ash Hill on it's 20 mile journey and over 1000 foot elevation drop to Amboy California which lies at the bottom of the Bristol Endorheic Basin on the shore of the Bristol Dry Lake. |
