On October 10, 1980, Santa Fe waycar 999009, the tenth caboose rebuilt into the railroad's 283 Ce-1 class cabooses in 1966, is about to duck into the first tunnel at Alray, in the heart of southern California's Cajon Pass. The tunnels were constructed in 1913, but in 2008 Alray's two tunnels were removed in order to double-track BNSF's North Main (essentially triple tracking the railroad's line over Cajon Pass). Cabooses also disappeared from mainline trains, so there is pretty much nothing in this photograph that can be seen today.

just heritage schemes, not just commemorative schemes - this album is devoted to some of the world's most interesting paint schemes, past or present.
