A short Amtrak train, operated for Amtrak President Joseph Boardman, climbs southern California's Cajon Pass on May 30th, 2016. This train, comprised of P42DC 156 (wearing the Phase I scheme it received as one of the carrier's 40th Anniversary engines in 2011), sleeper 10021 "Pacific Cape," Viewliner sleeper 62033, dome-lounge 10031 "Ocean View" and business car 10001 "Beech Grove", is operating from Los Angeles to Stockton, and the next day will continue on to Sacramento in order to accept delivery of the final Siemens-built ACS-64 electric locomotive.
On the morning of August 16, 2016, a fire started very near this spot, and almost immediately all rail and highway traffic was shut down as the "Blue Cut Fire" rapidly spread. Interstate 15, connecting Los Angeles to Las Vegas, was closed, and all BNSF and Union Pacific rail traffic was halted. Amtrak #4, the eastbound Southwest Chief, was rerouted through Mojave as well.
