About ten years from retirement, Southern Pacific SD45 9007 leads a westbound freight toward the crossing of the Santa Fe's mainline in Colton, California. Following SP 9007 are SD40 8418 and U33C 8750. (Curiously, SP 9007 was never rebuilt or renumbered.) Back before the 2000s, Colton Crossing was a local hot spot for railfans, as the SP crossed the ATSF line, on which the UP has trackage rights, making this crossing a very busy place for rail activity. Today, however, the former SP line has been elevated to cross the BNSF without any physical diamonds, so trains no longer have to wait for the crossing to clear.
