With a pair of venerable old EMD motors leading the charge Union Pacific's Mina Local hustles through Painted Rock en route to Hazen, NV and the former Southern Pacific Mina Branch. As the local heads for the barren desert it leaves behind the mountains, rivers, and greenery that foreshadow the daunting crossing of the High Sierra for westbound through trains traversing the Overland Route. Union Pacific 1486 began life as Missouri-Kansas-Texas GP40 #216, it was later rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen as SP GP40-2 7116.
