Remarks & Notes
GN 573 was the first SD9 purchased by Great Northern Railway, following acquisition of 23 SD7s, mostly for service in iron ore country. This is a Phase 1 SD9, looking essentially the same as an SD7 except for the class lights above the number boards. SD7s were centered over the number board. GN 679 poking its face out from behind the roundhouse was one of two GN passenger GP9s, generally serving the railroad around Duluth-Superior. Behind the SD is the Badger-Gopher consist powered by an E7.
