An afternoon thunderstorm is brewing May 30,1966, as CB&Q F3A 127A/B lead an eastbound drag at Barr Lake northeast of Denver. The units wear Q’s famous “grayback” paint scheme, faded and worn after more than two decades, further confusing a long-running debate among modelers. Is it light gray? Silver? Off-white? Officially imitation aluminum, the paint in pristine condition and bright sunlight had an almost pearlescent luster, making it one of the all-time classic F-unit liveries.
