Remarks & Notes
The Aurora Borealis! For years I've waited to see it, spending hours on "Aurora tracking" websites in hopes of there being an Aurora storm at the right time and with clear skies. Finally, one night driving home, I thought I was seeing some strange spotlight above the mountains, until the reality and the excitement hit me. A quick conversation with my dad, and we drove off into the night in hopes of a photograph. After botching a shot of Amtrak 7 due to not having enough time to set up, a train slipping by while trying to find a new spot, climbing up onto the rocks with a flashlight, and then a couple hours of waiting, finally the stars (and the Northern Lights!) aligned. Just after 2 A.M., Amtrak's eastbound Empire Builder races through the night leaving a light show in its wake, while the Aurora Borealis puts on its own show above, gently fluctuating in the sky to the north.

Good Light, Good Scenery, and a Train

Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.

America's Passenger Train. While some feel passenger equipment now looks all the same, the scenery is still breath taking and the locomotives and equipment look great.
