Remarks & Notes
SOO struggled with seasonal power shortages and occasionally 912 would be called out of Gladstone with a singe unit or lose a unit to a 911 that was having power problems. Normally an extra would be called out of Gladstone later in the day with 2-3 units to get enough power to Sault Ste. Marie for the next days 911 and extra west. These jobs were called "One Unit Wonders" and were roundly cursed by the crews as they normally couldn't make track speed in the cold and snow. I can only imagine the conversation in the cab on this day though as a single U-boat was probably far from inspirational. I shot this 912 with 806 chugging east solo with 76 cars on a very cold February 10, 1977 at MP444 about 5 miles west of Trout Lake by using my snowmobile to get to an inaccessible winter location.
