Remarks & Notes
Built between 1926-1930, Alco's 4-12-2s had the longest rigid driver wheelbase of any steam locomotive (until Russia built a 4-14-4). Number 9083, designated a UP-5, is seen here along the Lincoln Highway in western Nebraska. This one was in the last batch of 10, and is 2 years or so from scrapping. Aside from the maintenance issues, these were largely successful pulling heavy loads at high speeds in flat, straight shots (such as Omaha to North Platte to Cheyenne).
