| The shadows grow long in the desert as seven vintage EMD's lead the Trona Railway's daily train to Searles up the grade past the spectacular rock formations known collectively as the Trona Pinnacles, geologic remnants of a time when the mineral-rich valley floor was once at the bottom of a large lake. There was an almost unshakable feeling of loneliness in this remote desert place that I will never forget...
