Remarks & Notes

ESCOM (0-6-0) is a fireless type steam locomotive, built by W. G. Bagnall & Company Limited, that operated together with another fireless locomotive called TUGELA (0-4-0) shunting coal wagons at the Colenso Power Station from 1937 until 1984. Both locomotives are now plinthed in the grounds of the offices of the Colenso Municipality. The town of Colenso has significant history with the railways in South Africa, as it was on the banks of the Tugela River in Colenso during the 1920s that South African Railways built the Colenso Power Station (it opened in 1926) to supply electricity for the 274 km section of track between Glencoe and Pietermaritzburg (the first electrification in South Africa).
