Rio Grande F9A 5771 gets serviced in the road's Burnham Shops in Denver, Colorado, on August 29th, 1973. Rio Grande was one of the few railroads (along with Rock Island and Southern Railway) that did not join Amtrak when that carrier was formed in 1971. As such, the Rio Grande - and 5771 - continued in passenger service on the Rio Grande Zephyr , the Denver to Salt Lake City, Utah, segment of the once legendary California Zephyr .
