The East Entrance to Tunnel 8 - Looking east out of the darkness of Tunnel 8, the longest tunnel on the Desert Line, an old steel water tank is visible on the right.
The tank is about 8 feet square and about 25" high and is made of riveted iron plates on a raised wooden platform made of tunnel timbers.
The tank was fed (the tank has long since rusted out) by a pipe leading to a spring located up the hill to the right.
In the foreground, boulders and debris from the hill side have fallen onto the road bed and the track is fouled at this point.
Rock falls, avalanches and landslides are a common problem on the Desert Line and the lack of a maintenance crew keeping the track clear is all to evident. This railroad was embargoed in 2008 and there have been no trains running on this track since that time.
