One with nature. Blending rather nicely with her desert surroundings, Nevada Northern's Steptoe Flyer passenger train makes an afternoon run down the Adverse Branch toward Ely, bringing 1st shift workers home from the ore processing operations at McGill. In the early 1900s, this little train put on a lot of miles, hauling passengers between Ely and Cobre, nearly 140 miles to the north, where connections to the Southern Pacific enabled transcontinental travel. Service was discontinued in the late 1930s, when an improved system of highways and bus service rendered the railroad service uneconomical. Unlike a lot of steam passenger equipment, this train wasn't scrapped when it was retired, and it runs today for all to enjoy at the Nevada Northern Railway Museum in Ely.
