For two days each year, there's a very slight possibility to catch two Amtrak trains side-by-side along former C&O rails in an obscure, albeit interesting town situated along the banks of the New River in southern West Virginia. As a result of delays overnight in Indiana and Ohio, Amtrak's eastbound Cardinal is running late, interfering with the schedule of the annual New River Train, a Collis P. Huntington annual tradition. Here, Amtrak's New York bound train No. 50 passes the final running of the 2014 New River Train, sporting three locomotives and 30 cars; the longest of any passenger train in the United States for two consecutive weekends each year. Normally, the Cardinal would be long gone, but today's delay has created for one of those "right place right time" opportunities.
