New meets old in Brisbane, California, as recently-constructed Caltrain commute cars in push mode pass 30-year-old SP GP9s pulling 60-year-old coaches. SP "torpedo boat" 3195 and a second GP9E, with dynamic brakes, lead a southbound special during the "Farewell to Harrimans" event on Saturday, June 15, 1985, the day after the old cars' finale in regular service. Four trains, each with a different set of power, were operated between San Jose and San Francisco to commemorate the end of SP cars and engines on Peninsula commute service. Kodachrome 64
Where once there was only one commuter carrier, Southern Pacific between San Jose and San Francisco, today there are three: Caltrain (former SP), Altamont Commuter Express, and the newest, SMART (Sonoma-Marin Rapid Transit).
