Remarks & Notes
At 12.5 tons, the Cumberland Valley Railroad's "Pioneer" is one of the smallest passenger locomotives in existence - it's hard to imagine this little teapot wheeling varnish between Hagarstown, Maryland and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but that's exactly what it did for many years. Not very powerful – only two wheels were powered – it probably couldn’t pull very much (the 2-2-2 wheel arrangement was never very popular for this reason). It was preserved in 1901 and eventually became the property of the Smithsonian. It was displayed in the “Railroad Hall” at the Museum of American History, Washington D.C., for many years until that exhibit was closed. In 2010 it was given a cosmetic freshening-up and loaned to the B&O Museum for display.
