Silence in the desert At sunset, the rails at Thompson Hill are silent. An eastbound coal train is entering Thompson siding for a meet a couple miles away. Another coal train is slithering through the serpentine curves near Whitehouse, 15 miles away. So for now, the desert around Thompson Hill is wonderfully quiet and empty as another day ends with a golden sky.
