Remarks & Notes
V&T Survivor: McKeen Motor Car #22. The Virginia & Truckee's McKeen Motor Car was capable of carrying 54 passengers as well as baggage express. The passengers were carried in two cabins, the most forward of which was a small smoking section just in front of the stairwell. The larger aft cabin was general seating and in this photo, we look aft into that non-smoking cabin from the vestibule at the top of the stairs. Note the large, circular windows with heavy brass frames which actually serve to strengthen the body of the car. When open, the windows are held in place by very stout latches on the ceiling, so passengers likely didn't have to worry much about being konked on the head. At the very rear of the car, there is a semi-circular couch, not unlike what might be found in a railway observation car. Note that there is no position for a motorman. Although this car can run in reverse, the motorman's cab is located up in the pointy end of the car and normal operations were always conducted with that pointy end forward.
