Round 'em up! They're not happy, but their ride to market has arrived and it's time to load up. A cow-poke cracks the whip to get his herd together prior to entering the loading chutes at the Osier Stock Pens while a D&RGW Brakeman looks on from the relative safety of the catwalk above. Although they have not been used for real in decades, the old stock pens at Osier are still in fine shape, thanks to restoration and maintenance efforts by the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Just out of view to the left in this photo is the modern cafeteria facility used by the present-day tourist railroad to provide a lunch stop on the long trips between Chama, NM and Antonito, CO.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
