Remarks & Notes |
Dieselization came to Southern's Appalachia Division in 1947 when this four-unit F3 set arrived. Nicknamed "Big Sid," the four units had extra ballast installed to improve rail adhesion. This eastbound train is posed in the "amphitheater" at Natural Tunnel. The Southern company photographer was standing inside man-made "Little Tunnel" and looking north (or railroad "west"). The line through the natural portion of the tunnel is a 17 degree reverse curve on a descending grade of 1.7 percent against eastbound loads. The speed limit here (MP 24.2T) is a permanent 15 MPH, for obvious reasons. The small bridge crosses Stock Creek, which is flows through the tunnel (and in fact, created it over millions of years). |
