Remarks & Notes
With its bell caught on the upswing, L&N K-5 Pacific 266--a USRA design of uncommon visual appeal--rolls out of the tunnel at Latonia with the morning southbound Pan-American to New Orleans. This is the Great Depression, and the dark cloud of economic despair casts a pall upon the country. The "Pan" had already lost its all-Pullman status by this time, with a rebuilt (but posh) coach included in the shortened consist. And while there isn't much to cheer about, the CUT roundhouse forces have dolled up and shined the 266 to a high sheen---because this is still the "Old Reliable." (Thomas O.
