Remarks & Notes
A pair of CSX GEs are wound up tight as they drag a 15,000+ ton coal train bound for South Carolina up the "middle" leg of the Hagans Switchback at Smiley, VA. Two more GEs are 110 cars back shoving up the switchback. These are actually the rear pushers (or pullers in this case) of the southbound train. Once the train clears the OCV mainline in the foreground they will continue south toward NS trackage rights at Big Stone Gap. The switchback at Hagans is the only active mainline switchback in the continental US and is a great example of heavy haul mountain railroading.
