Remarks & Notes |
Even near the end of the F-unit era on the Soo Line single F's would be often called upon to work local freights. These units had been well maintained by the craftsmen that worked at Shoreham Shops in Minneapolis and were reliable to the end. In this late April photo the 500A is working west on the old DSS&A line that ran from St. Ignace to Marquette. This Extra has gons for loading at Mead Paper landings in both Newberry and Shingleton. Also in the consist are a few boxcars for lumber or paper loading and a number of tanks and flats. The whole train was in fact made up of loads and empties that were used in the movement of forest products. Note the light (80lbs) stick rail and the lineside telegraph poles that were still in operation at this time in Upper Michigan. |
