Back in 1978, just as it is today, the grassy hill at Alexandria Passenger Station was a great place to spend some time watching and photographing trains. It was busy, with freights from C&O, RF&P and Southern, and passenger trains from Amtrak and Southern. It was train time on May 21, 1978 as railfans manned the hill and passengers waited to get on southbound Southern No. 1, the "Southern Crescent." The train glided into the station with its usual compliment of four E8As.
