Remarks & Notes
My final trip to the C&NW 40th Street Shops was just before May 22, 1956, the last day for C&NW steam in Chicago. The only operational steam locomotives I saw on this visit were several 0-6-0s and an E2 class pacific being serviced. There were many retired locomotives to be seen throughout the terminal area. Clearly, the end was near. C&NW E-4 4-6-4 4009 was built by Alco-Schenectady in March 1937 and was scrapped in 1956. It was one of nine built to head C&NW's "400" passenger trains, but before they were even delivered the railroad decided that streamlined steam was the wrong direction and instead bought EMD diesels. The displaced E-4s instead worked other trains until they were sidelined in the early 1950s. Some E-4 tenders were saved and later used in ice melting service in Minnesota at the ore docks.
