Remarks & Notes
The weather forecast was set for day of grey misty gloom but high up in Cumbrian Mountains on the climb to Shap Summit the sun broke through briefly just as the Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express passed hauled by the perfect combination of a Black 5 and Jubilee (44871 and 5690 Leander) hauling 13 coaches plus a Class 47 diesel on the rear. The cold still damp air produced one of the best smoke trails I have seen stretching almost down the valley to Tebay and can be seen behind the lead engine. The wreath on the leading loco is in memory of Fireman Paul Kane who sadly collapsed and died while firing A4 60019 Bittern prior to Christmas, his funeral is today (31Dec10) in Carlisle. Technical Note the shot was taken with a new D7000 which performed well during the day. This shot I hope is a fitting finale to steam on the UK main line in 2010 and a tribute to all those many people who work tirelessly behind the stage that make scenes like this still possible more than 40 years after steam was officially banned from British Railways. Happy New Year to everyone

Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.
