Nothing on this train tells you that it is a Conrail run subsidized by the New Jersey Department of Transportation. Crossing the Garden State Parkway, the train is made up of two Penn Central E8s, what I think is a Santa Fe Budd EL Capitan car, and a string of P70s in both PRR and PC colors. Oh, there's one last car on the back... maybe another EL Capitan car? (To those who weren't in Northern NJ in the 1970s, these were called EL Capitan cars as the EL stood for Erie Lackawanna, where they first went into service and the Capitan for Santa Fe from whence they came.)
Thanks largely to mergers and bankruptcies, New Jersey's commuter railroads underwent profound changes between the end of steam and the takeover by NJ Transit in 1983.
