Adventures of railfanning... Brand new RP contributor David Caballido-Jeans noticed after exiting my Trailblazer that my front tire had a nice hole in it. I fondly remember him saying "Dude, you have a flat tire!" after the mile drive to Tunnel 1. With the sound of three EMD's whining in dynamics, and the K5LLA on UP 1989 growing ever so closer, the flat tire had to wait. The Rio Grande Heritage unit leans into the corner and exits one of only two double tracked tunnels on Donner Pass, and will soon come to a stop. Once we compared photos, and got in the car, the tire was completely flat. Looking at the cell phone and seeing "No Service" really made it even better! A limping trip out in four wheel drive, and then a slow crawl on Blue Canyon Road took us to Interstate 80 where Triple A was called, and 45 minutes later my full size spare was on the front right. Unfortunatly, our chase was over, but the memories and adventures of chasing UP 1989 for the first time will last. I think after three trips into Tunnel 1, and two resulting in flat tires, I'm done shooting that tunnel!
