Remarks & Notes
Great Victorian Railway Structures in Yorkshire No.2 - 99 Arches Viaduct, Wakefield. Built in the mid-1860s by the Great Northern Railway, the viaduct snakes southward out of Wakefield on the main Leeds to Doncaster route. Locals have always referred to the viaduct as '99 Arches', though whether it's a fact or a myth remains something of a mystery. It has been much altered over the years and several arches have been replaced for road widening. There appears to be no vantage point in Wakefield that can show the true length and scale of this fine structure - but I'm working on it! Steam on the viaduct is a rarity, but this morning 'Scots Guardsman' was captured heading south with a York to London special at 0810 hours.
