| Remarks & Notes |
| Early on a late summer morning, the dark desert horizon begins to lighten with the approach of daylight. Full sun is still 30 minutes away, and there hasn't been a train in hours. I'm hopeful UP will through me a bone with some nicely lit morning shots. At that moment, the EB signal at Basin flickers to life, announcing the approach of a train. Just a minute later, the whine of dynamics can be heard as the train slaloms through the canyon. I stir from my sleepy stupor and grab my camera. Although the light is still very dim, it might be worth an attempt to shoot this train. The headlight pops around the corner of the canyon, and the train surges towards me. Onto the Mojave River bridge, which hisses and pops at this newfound burden, and then the train is rushing past me towards the sunrise and the arrow-straight tracks heading right towards it. Free of the curves of the canyon, the train will accelerate to track speed until Cima Hill conspires with gravity to slow it back down. The sun will finally hit this train near Sands in 30 minutes, and will reach me just a tad later. |
