The brilliant morning sunshine at Chama Depot is just a memory as the daily train to Antonito comes off Tanglefoot Curve under building storm clouds. A pesky low pressure area spinning in place over Eastern Colorado had deposited snow on the mountain passes the previous day and, after teasing us with a little sunshine, was about to do the same thing this day. When the train coming from Antonito passed this spot just a couple of hours later, it would be in a heavy, wet snowstorm. Check out the hardy souls riding back there in the open car. By the time they reach Osier, they'll be looking forward to something hot for lunch!
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
