Named for noted rail photographer Fred Jukes, the "Jukes Tree" is one of the most popular railfanning spots on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Located roughly a half mile north of the Chama Yard, this spot is nicely lit for the morning departure of the train to Antonito. In this scene, Locomotive 484, a Baldwin K-36 lifts the "pops" as she hauls the heaviest consist she can take on this trip without help. This was supposed to be a double-header, but a maintenance problem with another locomotive left 484 to go it alone on the run up to Cumbres Pass. A few miles up the line, the stack-talk from this old girl left no doubt she was definitely earning her keep.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
