Remarks & Notes
If you are familiar with the Heber Valley Railroad's former D&RGW branch in Utah, Casperville Road is an intersection where the tracks cross a rural country roadway at the top of a steep grade from Charleston. When the US government built Deer Creek Dam in the late 1930's, about nine miles of the original alignment were abandoned and relocated along the western foothills above the natural drainage of the Provo River. At Casperville Road, the line tops a grade that begins at the Provo River, eventually making a gentle left hand turn meeting the original 1899 right of way two miles southwest of Heber City. In this photo, beautifully restored UP 1011 grinds up the hill with the 'Provo Canyon Limited' on a gorgeous partly cloudy afternoon. Note the bright color along the Wasatch Mountains, and the newly applied 'switcher' paint scheme on this classic EMD NW-2. If you were to cross the range of mountains in the distance, you'd be in the Salt Lake Valley.
