Remarks & Notes
GWR 4-4-0 no. 3440 City of Truro was apparently the first locomotive to reach 100mph. This was in 1904, but the information was not released to the public at that time for fear of spreading panic among passengers. Now part of the National Collection, it currently resides on the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway. Here we see it running in reverse while working a demonstration ballast train near Toddington at the Railway's 25th Anniversary Gala. Look closely and you can see the driver has his hand on the whistle.
