Remarks & Notes
One of the more interesting segments of the upper Cane Creek Subdivision is the 'zig zag' trackage between mileposts 9 and 7, just north of the now abandoned Arch passing track. Union Pacific's 'Potash Turn' has 24 cars today for Grand Junction as the engineer throttles up a short hill at milepost 6.8, soon after descending the zig zag. Note a plethora of new ties in position to be installed along the renewed right of way. At right, state highway #193, (from Crescent Junction on I-70 and Moab) takes a more direct but steeper alignment to the top. D&RGW anticipated long, daily unit trains from Potash when this line was designed and built...a dream which unfortunately didn't ever materialize in the scale that Rio Grande management had hoped for.
