A long way from home, a CSX SD40-2, formerly a Western Maryland SD40, leads an eastbound manifest through the curves at Mitchell. The train is about a mile below the summit, and a 3 unit helper set is cut-in midtrain to overcome the 3% grade. Scenes such as this would be gone forever in two short months when UP closed this route.
